Professor Colin T. Campbell had to choose between his career and sharing a discovery that opposes the western diet (i.e. the government’s recommendations and the medical industry’s claims). The CIA showed up at Dr. Campbell’s doors asking questions about his discovery. His colleagues warned him not to continue with his controversial research. He was threatened to be fired, but the doctor chose the truth.
Dr. Campbell is a nutritional biochemistry professor at the Cornell university and he found out that the main cause behind chronic diseases and cancer is consuming animal products, including fish, meat, and milk. He discovered a connection between the proteins found in milk called casein and breast cancer. The main focus of Dr. Campbell was cancer and diet. He is a big professional, however, he disapproves popular diets and does not like celebrity doctors. He aims at providing health to everyone, including those who cannot afford pharmaceutical treatments and drugs.
Animal protein increases the risks of cancer
According to him, doctors cannot be nutritionists as they do not have professional trainings in order to give advice on diets. Thus, he had spent more than 50 years in publicly financed laboratories and is certain to share the results he got from his research. Simple changes in the diet can cure cancer and also prevent heart disease. A diet high in animal protein increases the risks of cancer.
He showed that animal products consumption activates cancer cells, but meat intake reduction lowers the risks of this disease. Diet high in proteins increases the proliferation of cancer cells and also provides oxygen to the free radicals which often cause cancer. Thus, the cure in cancer lies in plants.
Raised on a farm, Dr. Campbell was convinced that milk provides great nutritional value, however, during the beginning of his academic year he studied dietary protein among children in the Philippines and discovered a connection between liver cancer and animal protein. Moreover, he was shocked more once he read an Indian study that claimed the same and everything went against anything he believed until then.
Along with his son Thomas, Dr. Campbell wrote a book on diet and epidemiologic studies in 2005. He expected a limited response from the public, but the book was sold in more than million copies and was translated into 25 different languages. He wrote another book in 2013 and it became a bestseller. He did a 5-year research which showed that casein is the worst carcinogenic that has been ever identified.
His research was not approved for human trials, however, smaller studies showed that diets based on plants can cure heart disease. The president of the National Dairy Council, Greg Miller, said that the claims of Dr. Campbell were all wrong and said that he had evidence that dairy products prevent cancer and improve the health of people.
Dr. Campbell’s helper
The son of Dr. Campbell said that the diet’s role is one of the most significant questions of the modern society and proper nutrition is a thing that has been long forgotten. In 2001 he started learning about nutrition and helped his father with his book. After this, he got into medical school where he learned nothing about it. Thus, he did a research and discovered that 75% of people who started a preventive diet continued to consume it later. He now tells his patients to avoid consuming animal products and stresses the significance of further human and clinical trials.
People eat too much
A professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, Edward Giovannucci, agrees with Dr. Campbell, confirming that the common diet is the source of bad health. The research of Dr. Campbell points that the connection between casein and breast cancer is reductionist. Dr. Campbell agrees to this, but claims that his research aims to show the link between the two. According to Giovannucci, the western diet is the worst and people eat too much, and it was not about casein. Dairy products offer the same nutritional values that plants have.
Milk does not improve bone health in later years
Even though milk has been shown to be beneficial and better than soda, it does not improve bone health in the later years. A lot of studies showed that milk increases the risk of osteoporosis later in life.
The Cornell Chronicle promised to publish the research of Dr. Campbell, but never did which is an instance of the pressure of the industry on universities, claiming that Cornell tries to discredit him. They offered help on translation, however, he refused.
Dr. Campbell wrote that some people in American Nutritional Community tried to reject his membership. He is now presenting his research among people in New York and North Carolina, offering free classes. He is speaking about how the Government ignores his science and praises corporative research.
He says that the global economy spreads across crops, livestock, agriculture, and agrochemical corporations to medical facilities, hospitals, drugs, and pharmaceutical companies. This is an economy based on certain diet recommendations which call for dairy products and consumption of meat. According to Dr. Campbell, radiation and surgery are the wrong approach for treating cancer. They only cause fatal consequences.
