The thyroid gland is highly important one as it produces thyroxin, a hormone which assists in regulating the metabolism, heart rate, and growth and development of children. It is located at the base of the neck and is shaped like a bow tie or butterfly, bending at the height of the throat base.
Two types of thyroid disorder can appear: hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
When the thyroid gland is too much active and releases too much of the thyroid hormone into the bloodstream, hyperthyroidism appears. The symptoms are:
- Racing thoughts;
- Issues with sleeping;
- Feeing hot;
- Elevated rate and palpitations;
- Change in bowel habits;
- Difficulty focusing on the task;
- Menstrual issues;
- Weight loss;
- Nervousness, irritability, or anxiety.
When the thyroid gland is underactive and does not produce enough hormone to be released through the blood, hypothyroidism appears. The symptoms are:
- Brittle nails;
- Dry hair and skin;
- Swelling in the front of the neck;
- Decreased menstrual flow;
- Muscle cramps;
- Weight gain;
